Negotiation Moment – I receive a written notice from my insurance company indicating they were cancelling my business insurance because they don’t insure authors. Specifically it said “we are unable to provide insurance coverage for you because we don’t provide coverage for businesses engaged in webhosting and authors. ”

I was referred to this company by an author. The letter came from headquarters so I contacted my local agent who said it was a mistake and he was assured it was being rescinded and my policy was not being cancelled.

Don’t make the mistake of ending it there. Making the assumption that the loop is closed may cause problems further down the line if you do not received something from the originating office stating the original letter is rescinded.

Ask for a letter retracting the original letter. I did and was told a letter will be coming. I will keep this in my pending file until the letter is received. I am sure the email from the local agent is fine but the original letter was from a higher level headquarters which could override the local office.

Thinking like a negotiator means always thinking about the way to protect yourself. Having a document from where the letter originated from indicated the original letter is rescinded closes the loop and ensures there are no loose ends that may be able to unravel at a later date.  Always protect your interests by going the extra mile. #Inegotiate
